JoomlaDayES 2024, held in Oviedo on October 4th and 5th, was established as a key event for the Joomla community in Spain. With a varied agenda and high-level speakers, attendees enjoyed two days focused on development and innovation in the Joomla! world. From exploring the new features of Joomla! 5 to recognizing the best websites with the JOYA Awards, this event was a true reflection of the continuous evolution and growth of the community.
The amazing, unstoppable women of Joomla are always here for all Joomla users. They never stop impressing us with their power and achievements. This month we have another amazing woman with us: Elisa Foltyn. Elisa has answered some of our questions to let us get to know her better.
"Our new series, 'Joomla! for Large Projects,' highlights Joomla as a robust and professional CMS. It is not only a great choice for small businesses or NGOs homepages but also suitable for large-scale commercial ventures. In this first edition, we feature Djumla’s work on a project for the logistics giant, GLS Germany. We thank David Jardin, Managing Director of Djumla, for sharing insights about the project, answering our five key questions."
In this tutorial I will be building on the full screen home page design that I demonstrated in last month's tutorial How to create a full screen photograph home page to create a more native app look to the template.
With Joomla's built-in powerhouse template, also known as Cassiopeia, you can do so much more than you’d think. In this tutorial we’ll create a slim and stylish header with just CSS!
I've participated in Pizza Bugs and Fun (PBF) several times, and it's always a fantastic event. It's an opportunity to test, document, and improve Joomla alongside fellow Joomlers, both in person and virtually. The most recent PBF on August 24th saw participation from people in Austria, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.
Most joomlers have visited one of Steve Burge's sites at some time, whether it's OSTraining for training or Joomlashack for extensions. What most of his tools have in common is their use in education.
We were curious to know why this former schoolteacher decided to devote his professional life to providing quality Joomla tools, so we asked him, and Steve kindly replied :
How many times do you do something when managing a website that you know shouldn’t happen but it’s easier to do the workaround than actually fix the problem? And once you know it’s a problem, how long does it take to actually fix it?
I’ve got a few examples. You may recognise some.
The Future is bright for Joomla 5 (and beyond)…
EPISODE V: T3, Extendible TM, GK, YT & Plazart Frameworks
Finally we will build a real Joomla component for our example event schedule! We’ll explore how to implement relationships between entities.
At the moment of writing, it's Joomla’s birthday, a celebration day for all Joomla volunteers and especially for the women contributors who continuously leave their mark on our favourite CMS. With this in mind I would like to present the Treasurer of Open-Source Matters Inc.
As you might know, Joomla 5 is a great open-source CMS all by itself and it does so much in the core that you can truly build a great website with just what is built-in… too often, sadly, website developers will use either:
The JCM Team is proud to present you the August Issue of the Joomla! Community Magazine.
This month we celebrate the 19th birthday of Joomla!
Wait - what? A content management system changing lives? Surely that can’t be a thing? Well, turns out it is. Like every other free and open source software, Joomla makes it possible for millions of people worldwide to change their life for the better. So: free, yes, but priceless in what it brings to us. JCM asked 19 people just one simple question: how did Joomla change your life? Read their inspiring stories!
Wonderful news! At the moment of writing, it's Joomla’s (19th) birthday.
But what is Joomla, and what are we celebrating?
Joomla is a content management system (CMS) as we all know. However, beyond this, Joomla is all the people who support it. A huge community of volunteers who are there to build, develop, extend, teach, communicate, advocate, and so much more.
I assume we all make assumptions ?, and often there’s no harm in this at all. But when it comes to written communication, which happens a lot in our community (think GitHub and Mattermost) things can easily go pear shaped when assumptions are made. Assumptions going rogue can lead to anger, sleepless nights, teams falling apart, volunteers rage quitting, work not being done and a ruined reputation (for the volunteer(s) involved and for Joomla). How does this happen, and how can we prevent it from happening?
A few days are left for the next episode of Joomla’s legendary Pizza, Bugs & Fun 2024.2 event. So prepare your GitHub account or check your documentation credentials, because you’ll need this. With Joomla 5.2 coming, there is a lot to do. Be ready on August 24th, 2024 to get your pizza and help Joomla to get release ready. Whether you're a seasoned Joomla enthusiast or new to the scene, PBF 2024.2 offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference while enjoying some fun and free pizza.
For the first time since getting involved with Joomla I’m actually excited about the state of Joomla documentation for extension developers!
In the past Joomla hasn’t had the best reputation for developer documentation, but for me the Joomla Manual is a big step forward. I think it’s important for the Joomla project to view extension developers as “customers” and make it easy for them to find all the good stuff that there is in Joomla.
I joined the small team contributing to the manual about a year ago, and it’s been very satisfying to see the Manual taking shape. We’re not there yet, but definitely on the right track.
A birthday is always a time for celebration, but also an excellent opportunity to remember the years gone by.
For 19 years, Joomla has changed. A LOT. These changes were decided and implemented by volunteers - women and men - who gave their time for this project.
