Celebrate Joomla's 10th Birthday

Celebrate Joomla's 10th Birthday

On August 17th Joomla will be 10 years old. That's a truly amazing achievement for any open source project especially one that is 100% community run without any corporate overlord or backer. 10 years of a global community working together motivated not by money or personal gain but solely to create something that the world can use freely. As I look back to the events of August 2005 and the decision we made to leave the comfort of Mambo and start this journey it is hard for me to believe what we have achieved in that time.

Googlebot Cannot Access CSS and JS Files on...

Last month Google sent out its updated guidelines to gain visibility in Google search results. They involve accessing certain .css and .js files (stylesheets and javascripts) on your website. This affects the ranking of results. The following article explains what you need to do to your Joomla website to be in line with these new guidelines.

So, You Want to Be a Leader!

So, You Want to Be a Leader!

This quote from Dwight D. Eisenhower touched me in a special way: Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because s/he wants to do it. Leadership is about setting an example on how to do the right things. And show others how to do it by giving direction and inspiration.

A Decade of Joomla!

A Decade of Joomla!

The Joomla project is turning 10 in the coming days and weeks. It is the conviction, hard work, love and passion of the Joomla Community that has brought us this far. It is the talent of countless people, some no longer active, and many who are, that has brought us this far. Collaboration is not always smooth sailing. But each one’s contribution makes a difference, and thanks to them today the Joomla CMS is a jewel and an exquisite solution for building websites.

Power to the People!

Power to the People!

Hard to believe it was only 10 years ago when Joomla was first introduced to the community. Back then, ( am I really saying " back then" for only 10 years? ) Joomla 1.0 was just introduced and I was enchanted by the power of the open source community and under the hood looking at code, scouring the forums, trying to make sense of it all. For me and my fledgling consulting business my customers loved my technical prowess with HTML but hated calling for every little change they wanted to make. It just didn't seem right they couldn't update their site by themselves and I agreed totally but had no answer for them until Joomla!.

Category Item Count: To a Generic Solution

Category Item Count: To a Generic Solution

Last month I described how a new feature was developed to count the number of articles in each category. At the end of the 2nd day of JoomlaDay France 2015, the feature was working… that is, it counted all articles (for com_content) in the Category Manager for Articles. I got it working by adding a hard-coded “if extension = com_content” check in the Category Manager. That’s not a solution but a workaround, I was fully aware of that.

The High Cost of Staying Old

The High Cost of Staying Old

I had a client who refused to pay to have his site migrated to Joomla 3. I argued with him, offered him deals and discounts, and still he did not see the business sense of spending money to "migrate".  His attitude was one of resentment that upgrading was now migration and all the mumbo-jumbo that went with it was just not anything he understood or even wanted to understand. He did not see the difference and the new functions didn't seem to sell him.
