JCM's Top Twenty(-something)

Staff pick: 20+ memorable Joomla Community Magazine Articles

With all the celebrations and birthday wishes going on for Joomla's 20th birthday, we thought it would be a good idea to dive into JCM’s history and come up with articles we love, or that we refer to again and again. This is JCM’s Staff Pick of memorable, beautiful, or just super practical articles!

Stop searching, start filtering!

Claudia Weber-Lenck picked this because: Joomla has many great features. But there are also a lot of little-known options and features. I love articles that deal with such unknown, somewhat hidden features (preferably with step-by-step instructions). One example of this is Nadja Lamisch’s article on creating filters in Smart Search.

End to End Testing with Joomla and Cypress

Herman Peeren likes this because: Astrid Günther gives so much background information about testing, besides a practical guide on how to use Cypress tests.

Do you need another extension? Let’s find out.

Anja de Crom loves this because: it’s basically a decision tree that takes you through everything you need to consider before randomly installing something that might not fit your needs. Plus it has an infographic! Kudos for Crystal Dionysopoulos!

Custom Fields and Web Services API

Herman Peeren chose the series about Custom Fields and The Web Services API (by Marc Dechèvre) because: so much information, with practical examples and resources.

JCM March 2018, episode 1: How far can we go with Joomla! and Custom Fields?

JCM May 2018 episode 2: how to manage your Custom Fields

JCM October 2018 episode 3: all the parameters one can wish for

JCM April 2020 episode 4: a step by step tutorial

JCM July 2021 episode 5: List of Resources (no need to list them here again)

JCM August 2021 episode 6: Make more with extensions

JCM October 2021 episode 7.1: one Custom Field to rule them all

JCM November 2021 episode 7.2: without limits

Any article that gives me new Joomla knowledge!

Emmanuel Lemor likes many articles: too many to count but particularly those with tags: tags: #administrator, #how to. Any article that adds knowledge that I didn’t have previously for me is like finding a little gold nugget in an ocean of information.

E-commerce and Template articles

Herman Peeren fondly remembers: In the first year of the Magazine (2010) we had Team EaSE: Extensions and Services Evaluation Team. I especially liked it that they were writing as a team. Among other things they had two articles about e-commerce extensions and three about Template Tools.

E-Commerce:

Template Tools:

Interviews in the magazine

Herman Peeren loves the interviews in the magazine, because: Joomla = people!

How I became a Joomler - Patrick Smits

Dan Atrill likes reading articles about how people get into using Joomla: This helps me validate my own reasons for using it. I like that Patrick is a graphic designer and sees many possibilities for using Joomla. And the idea of jumping on his bicycle to join the Dutch Joomla Community makes the sense of togetherness feel like something that’s simple and easy to achieve.

Spread the Joomla Love (2025 edition)

Serge Billon says: It reflects 20 years of Joomla AND the Joomla Community Magazine, even if the latter isn't as old. Brian, one of the pillars of the project, interviewed by one of the best, Anja, to talk about a subject that is still very topical: spreading the love of Joomla. We've been doing it and saying it for 20 years now, and we're all proud of it.

Some articles published on the Joomla Community Magazine represent the personal opinion or experience of the Author on the specific topic and might not be aligned to the official position of the Joomla Project
