New to Joomla Contribution? Pizza Bugs & Fun Is the Perfect Place to Start, January 30 - 31
If you ever wanted to contribute to Joomla but are not sure where to begin, Pizza Bugs & Fun (PBF) is the ideal first step. On January 30 - 31, the global Joomla community is coming together for two days of learning, collaboration, and hands‑on contribution.
A friendly introduction to Open‑Source contribution
Contributing to a major open‑source project can feel intimidating at first. I know I was. PBF removes that pressure. The event is designed so beginners can learn at their own pace, ask questions freely, and get guidance from more experienced contributors who love helping others get started.
You don't need to be a developer. You don't need to know Git (but you will probably learn how to use it). You don't even need to understand how Joomla's codebase works. If you can follow instructions, test things, write clearly, or simply stay curious, you can contribute.
What you can do as a newcomer
PBF offers many ways to participate, including:
- Testing bug fixes to confirm they work,
- Improving documentation so others can learn more easily,
- Checking accessibility and user experience,
- Helping translate or refine text,
- Learning how patches are created and reviewed.
Every task is explained step by step, and other joomlers are available throughout the event to help you succeed.
Join a local group or participate online
You can join from anywhere in the world. Many participants gather in universities, offices, or community hubs. But you can also join online and contribute from home. All you need is a laptop and a willingness to learn.
If there's no physical location near you, you can even start one. The PBF team provides all the info you need to host (join Mattermost and look for the OR PBF channel, or check our website).
Why it's worth joining
PBF is more than a contribution sprint (if you miss this one, the event resumes every 6 months). It’s a chance to:
- Learn new skills,
- Meet friendly people from the Joomla community,
- Discover how open‑source collaboration works,
- Make a real impact, even on your first day,
- Enjoy the fun, energy, and yes - the pizza (you order, we pay you back).
Many long‑time contributors started at PBF. It's the kind of event where beginners become confident, and confidence becomes contribution.
