Together we grow Joomla: How to make a podcast about Joomla

How to make a podcast about Joomla

If you’re passionate about Joomla! and looking for new ways to engage the community or grow your personal brand, podcasting might be your next big step.

With Joomla! 5.3 just released, now is the perfect time to amplify our message—and podcasting might be your next favorite way to do it. It’s a powerful tool not just for broadcasting ideas, but for building real connections with people who care about open source, the web, and the future of Joomla!.

Why a podcast and not a blog?

In our latest issue, Anja wrote an insightful article about How to blog about Joomla! and it’s very likely that it inspired you to start your own blog. That’s great! But let me tell you something: blogging limits the content formats you can use. Let’s dive in, what does a podcast give you that a blog can’t:

Writing Is Still Key

Don’t think for a minute that creating a podcast is just about speaking. In reality, most of your time will be spent writing… You need to write your script, write your interviews, you need to create the episode show notes, and you even need to write the texts to promote your podcast in social media. So, if you love writing, podcasting might be an even better fit than blogging.

Own your message

Written content stays on the screen, and readers interpret it in their own voices. With a podcast, you say exactly what you mean…

Also, there is no way a blog post can make the reader feel how excited you are about a new feature in Joomla!.

It’s not only the content, but how you communicate it, so your message goes to the heart of your listeners.

Personal connection with your audience

People tend to listen to their podcasts when commuting or doing chores, and that involves they use a headset. That gives you a great pathway to insert your message into their head.

With a podcast episode, your voice is coming directly to their brain.

Reach busy people

People are busy. They often don’t have time to sit down and read a 10-minute article, no matter how well written it is. When talking about podcasts, you can do your laundry or walk your dog when listening to a podcast.

Ok, I’m in, let’s start podcasting about Joomla!

Podcasting is as easy as grabbing a microphone and recording what you want to say. There are not fixed rules and you can structure your podcast in any way you want. Here you have some tips that you may use:

Follow a fixed section structure

Your listeners will appreciate some structure in your content. For example, a common recipe is:

  1. Intro music
  2. Welcome to the podcast
  3. Main topic
  4. Goodbye
  5. Outro music

You can remove parts or add others—like audience comments, a challenge of the week, or the latest Joomla! news. Just try to keep some structure across episodes, so listeners know what to expect.

Just try to keep some structure across episodes, so listeners know what to expect. And when you change your format, let your audience know in advance. Having a defined structure makes them feel better.

You can also add and remove sections as your show evolves but try to announce the changes at least for a couple of episodes so that they know the episode is going to be a bit different.

Ideas for your next episodes

Here you have some ideas for your next episodes:

Read blog articles

This is the easiest way to start podcasting, as you can reuse all the content in your blog or even other authors (just be sure you get their permission first).

Interview an expert

There are lots of interesting stories in our community. Some people became Joomla! Addicts after developing the website for their local church, others were forced into Joomla! By an employer, and now they can’t live with it. Find popular profiles in our volunteers portal and set up an interview.

Other experts not directly involved in Joomla! community are also interested candidates for your podcast: Hosting companies staff, PHP developers, web security experts… The list is as big as our industry.

Top extensions and templates

People love listings. It’s a fact. These episodes will be quite popular among listeners, and they are easy to produce. You can create lists based on your top extensions, or check the best rated ones at JED. You can feature:

  • Your favorite extensions
  • Best-rated tools on the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED)
  • Niche-specific picks (e.g., e-commerce, newsletters, templates for photographers)

How-tos and tutorials

Listeners of a podcast about Joomla! will love when you get a bit technical, and you teach them your secrets or how to do things. Truth be told, in a podcast, you are limited in what you can show to your listeners. Describe your steps in the audio and for sure your listeners will learn some new tricks.

Also, do not forget that you can add images to the episode show notes, and you can even add chapters to your audios to provide images directly in your audience podcast players.

Off-topic episodes

Believe it or not, listeners start following you because you talk about Joomla!, but the episodes in which you barely talk about Joomla! Will be the ones they prefer.

On this category, everything is valid: Talk about the programs and apps you use on a daily basis, relate your latest experience in a restaurant or list the characteristics of your brand-new toaster. As long as you make the episode a bit personal, and they feel identified with your experience, they will love it.

Podcasting about Joomla! is more than just broadcasting your thoughts—it’s about connecting a vibrant, global community of users, developers, and enthusiasts who believe in open source and collaboration. Your voice helps shape the Joomla! story. So don’t wait for the perfect moment—grab your mic, hit record, and let the world hear what Joomla! means to you. The community is listening.
