Happy New Year from the Joomla! Leadership Teams! We are pleased to be ringing in the new year with the 2.5 Beta 1 release, heralding the arrival of 2.5.0 later this month. Here's hoping that a few noteworthy news items from December will bring good cheer and get 2012 off to a great start...

When a website development project is ready to be delivered, the clients usually demand a customised built-in help system so that they know how to navigate through the loads of menu items and web pages in order to maintain and manage the content/site in the absence of the development team.  Implementing such a built-in help system is made easier by Joomla’s Administrator Menu module.

"A picture is worth a thousand words". In the online world, this adage is still correct. Your website will look more lively and stunning if there is a photo gallery. Yes, photos not only help you share your world with website visitors but they also help you convey your ideas.

On December 3, 2011 the Joomla! Day LA was held at the Microsoft offices in downtown Los Angeles. Based upon the modes of transportation used by the attendees, it was Joomla’s version of “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles”.  Several people flew into LA to attend/speak. I personally drove to the nearest MetroLink Train station, rode the MetroLink train to Union Station, then walked the last mile to the event.

Joomla! 2.5 will be released in January 2012 and it is the successor of Joomla! 1.5. It will be a so called long term release and it will be the Joomla! state of the art until July 2013. The versions 1.6 and 1.7 were short term releases and they paved the way to Joomla! 2.5.

The purpose of this paper is to present WebSocket technology, included in the latest HTML5 specification, which allows much faster communication and dynamic communication server / client.

One of the most powerful new features in Joomla 1.6 and later versions is Access Control Lists (ACL). ACL stands for access control lists. It refers to who has permission to do what on the website, including read, create, edit, delete, or log in, among other permissions.
