18 ways to give back to Joomla

2023---JCM-August-Give-Back

Born 18 years ago, Joomla is an open-source project supported solely by volunteers. Here are 18 ways to help Joomla if you want to support this project.

Joomla! is the only major CMS that is built entirely by volunteers from all over the world.
From 2007 to 2013, I've been helped by many Joomlers and since 10 years, I've decided to give back to Joomla. Giving back was something obvious to me as I wanted to help others like I have been helped and I also wanted to share all the skills and knowledges learnt for years. Sharing is caring!

Giving back is only a matter of willingness. You only need to decide to do it, no matter your skills, your job, your financial situation, etc.
If you want to help the Joomla project, I've listed 18 ways to give back. Most of won't cost you a cent, only a few seconds, minutes or more, depending on your avaibility.

1- Join the project, tens of volunteer positions are available

This is probably the first step if you want to give back to Joomla. Helping the project that helps you daily by volunteering is an obvious and smart way to give back.
Don't know where to go or where to start? Take a look here: https://volunteers.joomla.org/help-wanted

2- Write articles for the Joomla Community Magazine

Your Joomla expertise, your ideas, you advice, your thoughts, your Joomla skills are potential articles for the Community magazine. Just start!
And if you don't feel confident / legitimate to write, if English isn't your native language, don't worry because there's a magic team ready to help you.

3- Create content about Joomla on your blog/website

Because content is king, feel free to produce content (videos, infographics, tutorials, articles, etc.) related to Joomla on your blog, your website, your podcast, your video channel, your LinkedIn profile, etc.
You'll demonstrate your expertise and it's beneficial for you and for Joomla. Win-win!

4- Share your Joomla love on social media

You've read an interesting article on the JCM? Watched an amazing video about Joomla on Youtube?
Share it on your social networks with few words why you love this content and why it could be useful for your fans.

5- Wear your Joomla T-shirts when you go outside

Yeah, wearing Joomla clothes is also a great way to give back to Joomla.
Personally, I proudly wear my Joomla T-shirts on my daily walk. And you?

6- Make a donation to Joomla

You can't volunteer for Joomla due to a lack of time or availability? No problem, we all have family, friends, work, etc.
But if you want to give back to Joomla, you can simply setup a recurring donation as a sponsor: https://community.joomla.org/sponsorship-campaigns.html

7- Create more websites with Joomla for you, your friends, your clients...

There's always a good occasion to create a new website with Joomla. And you can do it for free in minutes with https://launch.joomla.org
Don't forget, the more Joomla websites there are online, the more it will help Joomla.

8- ...and list them on the Joomla Showcase Directory

Once you've created your new Joomla websites, don't forget to list them on the Joomla Showcase Directory: https://showcase.joomla.org

9- Create Joomla related based projects

There's already some projects related to Joomla and I'm sure Joomla needs more. Much more. Such projects are private (not driven by OSM), commercial or not, and trend to promote Joomla as wide as possible. For example, I've created the Joomla Override Challenge with Viviana Menzel, a Joomla Templates Directory and I plan to release some others Joomla related projects.

10- Participate to your JUG or create one if there's not in your city

The JUGs - Joomla User Groups - are the local communities of Joomla users. There are many around the world: https://community.joomla.org/user-groups.html
If there's no JUG close to you, a Joomla User Group is free and easy to create (you only need 2 Joomla users to create a JUG).

11- Reply to newcomers questions

We all started one day and we all had questions. And we were very happy to get answers from experienced users to understand and move forward.
The forum - and the Facebook groups - are the perfect places to start to help newcomers to Joomla. It's only take few secondes to reply their questions :)

12- Vote for Joomla when your favourite CMS is nominated

Every year, Joomla is nominated to online contests by specialized IT media. If you want to give back, simply vote for Joomla as the Best Open Source CMS.

13- Leave comments about Joomla on blog posts

There are tons of articles on the internet where we can comment with Joomla websites examples, Joomla features, etc.
Just imagine if every Joomla volunteer commented a single article on the internet per month... every month... Just imagine how powerful this would be for Joomla.

14- Leave a review on the extensions you use

Joomla is a Community made of people like you and me and some of us are developers. And without them, we couldn't create websites.
When you use an extension listed on the Joomla Extensions Directory, take a minute to post a review to share your experience with the Community. It is very helpful for other users and also very grateful for the developer.

15- Test the alpha versions when available

Frequently, the production team release new versions of Joomla for security and / or with new functionalities. These versions need to be tested to be validate before the official release. These tests are essential for Joomla's credibility and everybody can help here as it take only few minutes and no coding skills are required.

16- Participate to the PBF (also for the pizzas)

The PBF - AKA Pizza Bugs and Fun - are local and online events organized by Joomla to test, debug, and patch the different versions of Joomla.
The next PBF will stand on the 26th August: https://www.pizza-bugs-fun.com/en/

17- If you code: create new extensions, new templates

If you have some coding skills and you want to help Joomla, you can also develop new extensions like components, modules, plugin, and templates for Joomla.
What ever your products will be free or commercial, it will be helpful for Joomla and so, a nice and great way to give back.

18- Buy your domains with Joomla

Did you know that you could buy your domains with Joomla? Joomla is delighted to offer you an opportunity to give back to the project whilst benefiting from competitively priced domains and fantastic customer service from BRANDIT.

Wrapping up

There are so many ways to give back to Joomla and none is better than another. Just choose one (or more) you're comfortable with and start spreading your love for Joomla by giving back.

Hey Diego

Thanks for the comment.
How would you do that? If you have any ideas or tips, feel free to share or to get involved in a Joomla team to make it happen!
