Why not Joomla?

Why not Joomla?

Under this somewhat provocative and enigmatic title, I would like to discuss a syndrome that is common in the community, and I am pretty sure you will recognize it.

Recently, I met with clients to discuss their website redesign projects. It is a cooperative organic store in the city center, run by residents for residents. I am very familiar with the project, as I am a regular customer.

The clients had already provided me with a set of specifications, namely their desire to redesign their website, which runs on a CMS that is well known to the public as it is the most widely used in the world. The quote was accepted, and we met for an initial scoping meeting to establish what each party expected from the other.

So I arrive with a document presenting the project, how I plan to proceed, and a schedule to be approved, and we begin to discuss this upcoming collaboration with the team in charge of the association's communications. Everything is going well, and we are almost finished when the person in charge of the website (who, as it turns out, lives across the street from me) blurts out, "Anyway, I don't like this CMS!"

Having barely heard him, I ask him to repeat himself: "Yes, I don't understand why they installed this CMS for us in the first place, I don't understand it at all, it's complicated!"

He continued: "I use another CMS that I like for my personal website. Have you heard of Joomla?"

"Yes, I know a little about Joomla. You can Google my name..."

This was followed by a burst of laughter, and we resumed our comparative discussion of CMSs, ending with the question, "Well, why not Joomla?"

I am not at all certain that the project will be migrated to Joomla, as certain features will require additional work during migration, but we will look into this possibility. The client seemed delighted to meet a local Joomla specialist and, above all, to have a credible alternative to their CMS, which they did not fully understand.

This episode taught me that we are too humble with Joomla!. I could have announced right from the start that it was my favorite tool and made the migration proposal. Instead, I had the preconceived idea that the client preferred his tool and would have rejected any other proposal.

So let's not be afraid, let's be proud of Joomla because we can be, and that confidence is well deserved.
