First time at Pizza, Bugs and Fun: 'It was surprisingly easy!'
Twice a year, you can participate in Joomla’s Pizza, Bugs and Fun, a 24 hour world wide event where everyone can contribute to Joomla in their own way: by squashing bugs, testing features and fixes, or writing or translating documentation. In Denmark, there were three people from the Danish User Group who jumped into their first PBF together. JCM interviews two of them: Ronny and Chris.
Could you please introduce yourselves?
Ronny: Ronny Buelund, Aarhus in Denmark. I work as a teacher and have an IT company besides that. I have been working with Joomla since 2005, where I was introduced to it in a kayak club.
Chris: Chris Mortensen, Odder in Denmark. I work with spare parts for heavy duty lifting equipment. I’ve been working with Joomla since Mambo.
Are you active in the Joomla community, and if so, what do you do?
Ronny: I am actively maintaining the danish translation of the core files - I am the only one doing this work right now (and for years)
Chris: Ronny and I are keeping the only JUG left in Denmark active once a month.
What made you decide to join Pizza, Bugs and Fun this year?
Ronny: I saw the announcement, watched the introduction video, and thought: “Let me ask the others in JUG-Aarhus” - they thought it was a great idea 🙂
Chris: Thanks to Ronny we finally took the step to participate.
How did you prepare for PBF?
Ronny: I made a document in my own Nextcloud and shared it with the others. Here I put a link to Mattermost, and to the intro video. I collected pizza wishes and Chris bought some bread for the morning.
Chris: Installed a fresh Joomla along with the Patch Tester, made an account on Github and Mattermost as suggested in the intro video.
Do you feel there was enough information to get started?
Ronny: The video told quite well what was about to be going on, although it was from 2024.
Chris: Yes, the video was great.
What were your expectations before the event?
Ronny: I just thought that it would be a nice day with some interesting testing of PR’s :-)
Chris: To be able to contribute and have a nice time with friends.
What did you do (test patches, write documentation, translate, something else)?
Ronny: We tested patches - primarily me working on the big screen and the others coming with input. Maybe we will do it different next time, so that we can test even more PRs :-)
Chris: Patch testing. Everyone together.
How did it go?
Ronny: We had a really nice day, and tested a lot of PRs!
Chris: Very well. It was surprisingly easy to use the patch tester and follow the instructions coming with each patch.
What was your first contribution to this PBF and what did it feel like?
Ronny: I tested a patch (do not remember which), and it felt quite easy, so a good feeling.
What did you learn from joining?
Ronny: I learned how to test patches, and I also learned some of the new features in Joomla, which is a great side effect of testing and translating.
What was the biggest challenge?
Ronny: The biggest challenge was to test the PRs that had to be installed directly as updates, but Emmanuel did a great job in helping us. Also the spreadsheet was a bit of a challenge, because some PRs had already been tested, but then not marked in the sheet - maybe there is room for some improvement here, so that we do not make double work for each other :-)
Chris: Agree with Ronny here.
And the biggest surprise?
Ronny: How easy it actually was to do the testing.
Chris: That most PRs are actually very small / simple changes and therefore very easy to test.
Will you join next time?
Ronny: We all agreed that we would do it again.
Chris: Totally.
What would you like to say to people who are not sure if they should join in PBF?
Ronny: Jump into it! Yes there might be a steep learning curve, but there is help nearby, so do not worry :-)
Chris: If you can follow instructions, you can help.
