Celebrate Joomla's 10th Birthday

Celebrate Joomla's 10th Birthday

On August 17th Joomla will be 10 years old. That's a truly amazing achievement for any open source project especially one that is 100% community run without any corporate overlord or backer. 10 years of a global community working together motivated not by money or personal gain but solely to create something that the world can use freely. As I look back to the events of August 2005 and the decision we made to leave the comfort of Mambo and start this journey it is hard for me to believe what we have achieved in that time.

Spread the Joomla Love

As my small contribution to the 10th Birthday I have created a web site (http://www.spreadthejoomlalove.com) where everyone can go and post their Joomla story and Birthday wishes. You can see a timeline of "Joomla firsts" and look for your name in the wall of code and documentation contributors.

How can you celebrate our 10th Birthday?

Joomla User Group (JUG)

If you are a member of a JUG why don't you organise a birthday party on or near the 17th. Don't forget to add the details of your party to the events web site (http://events.joomla.org/) so that non-regular attendees know all about it.

No Local User Group?

If there is no JUG near where you live (don't forget to check the list at https://community.joomla.org/user-groups.html) see if there are other Joomlers that live near you and get together to share a birthday drink and even a piece of cake.

Virtual BBQ

When Joomla began, even before we had a name, we held a Virtual Barbecue (http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=152&p=1417). So if there is no JUG near you and no one nearby to meet up with just pop online to twitter or facebook and use the hashtag #Joomla10BBQ. Put a sausage on the bbq, open a bottle of your favourite brew and celebrate our 10th year.

Make your first contribution

Everyone is able to contribute to Joomla. Everyone who uses Joomla at whatever level is sure to find another Joomler who needs some help at the forum (http://forum.joomla.org). If you are feeling more adventurous then the docs team are always looking for help either in updating, writing or translating. And if you are feeling really adventurous then check out a bug report and test a fix or even write a fix.

So let us "all together as a whole" make this a birthday to remember. Let us look back at all the truly amazing things that have been achieved over the last ten years and look forward to breaking new ground, creating new initiatives and enhancing what he have created.
