Together we grow Joomla: Podcasting - Simple Tools, Big Impact

Podcasting is a powerful way to connect with others, build a community, and let your voice be heard. So a podcast about all the good things Joomla can bring could be a great idea to make get the word out. But too often, people hold back - thinking they need fancy equipment, expensive software, or a perfect studio to get started. The truth is: you don’t.

Starting your podcast about Joomla isn’t rocket science. With just a simple microphone, a quiet corner, and a bit of planning, you can bring your voice to life and reach listeners everywhere. In this article, I’ll walk you through the basics—from planning and recording to editing and publishing—without the overwhelm or the hefty price tag. Whether you’re spontaneous or a planner, tech-savvy or a total beginner, you’ve got what it takes to hit record and start your journey.

There are lots of consultants and podcasters out there who will tell you to buy expensive devices or programs to create your show. You really do not need fancy gadgets to start. Just grab a microphone and start recording ;).

How does a podcast work?

The mechanics of a podcast are simple: the podcaster publishes their audio in a public hosting and updates an XML file with the information about the podcast and each episode of the podcast.

This file is called the podcast's feed or channel. Podcast followers use a program or app (usually called pod catcher) to read the XML file and obtain the audio: they then subscribe to the channel using this pod catcher.

What will be your podcast about?

If you are the spontaneous type, I guess you just need to decide on the topic you want to talk about. There are podcasts on all kinds of topics. In the world of web development, there are podcasts about marketing, usability and UX, accessibility, or even about a specific CMS. Yours will be about Joomla, of course.

In any case, this is your show, and you can also choose a multi-topic format and talk about something that interests you every day. Remember that a podcast isn't just a marketing tool; it helps you have fun and connect with many more people who share your interests.

Planning your episodes

Most of the time, you probably want to have a script to follow when you are recording. This can be more or less elaborate, it depends on what you need when speaking to the microphone.

In any case, try not to make it too long and read it directly when recording. When we read texts aloud, we do not feel that natural, and it’s not very interesting for our listeners.

In podcasting, as well as in blogging, consistency is the key for great results, so try to schedule your episode writing and recording sessions. This way you will not miss them, and you will not be in a rush (as I am in the Magazine when Anja reminds me the deadline for my articles 😝)

Recording process

Find a quiet spot and grab a microphone. Most of the time, the headset you use for your video calls, or even the one that came with your phone, will do.

In case you want to get more specialized and buy a microphone, I recommend starting with dynamic microphones. These are a great start because they work fine in noisy environments, and you will be able to record your episodes at home with not much fuss.

If you want more features to check in your microphone, you need to look for cardioid pickup pattern so that it focus on your voice and not in the rest of the sounds of your recording area.

When looking for recording software, you can find many tools around. I personally recommend using the software Audacity: It’s Free software, it runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and there are tons of documentation on the web on how to use it.

Editing your audio

Once you have recorded your episode, you need to make it more appealing for your audience. Adding some jingles, sound bites and stingers will entertain your listeners and will make them to come back for more episodes.

As soon as you start editing your audio, you will notice there is some kind of audio signature that relates to you and helps you create your identity. As you cannot use images or visual tricks, you can use this audio signature to define your brand.

At the minimum, I recommend you to add an intro to your episodes. Look for some audio that reflects the energy of your show, check their legal conditions to know how you can use it in your podcast and add it to your show.

Finally and really important, as you are editing your audio, listen to it and remove the parts you are not comfortable with. You may also apply some audio editing magic from any tutorial to make the voices sound better.

On this stage, I keep recommending Audacity.

Publishing your podcast

Once we have created our episode, we need to make it available to the world. As we stated at the beginning of the article, you only need to host the audio file publicly somewhere and create an XML file with the data and episodes of your show.

Final thoughts

Podcasting is not about having the perfect voice, the latest gear, or a flawless production. It’s about sharing something that matters—to you, and to the people who will eventually find you. It’s about being consistent, honest, and human.

Whether you’re speaking to five people or five thousand, your words can inform, inspire, or simply make someone’s day better. And the best part? You already have everything you need to get started.

So grab a mic, hit record, and let the world hear what you have to say.

We’re listening. 🎙️
