Joomla! World Conference 2014, Get Your Tickets Now!

The upcoming Joomla World Conference is just around the corner! I recently sat down with Jon Neubauer, one of the JWC organizers, to learn more about the JWC and everything that is planned. Read through and take advantage of the JCM discount code!

Why Cancun?

One of the goals we have as the world conference is to be able to showcase the global Joomla community, including many of the large and vibrant communities that often aren’t able to attend events in Europe or the United States. This year we’re excited to be bringing the conference to the Latin American community, and Cancun was an ideal location that was easier for Joomla users in Central and South America to reach, and still accessible for the rest of the Joomla community.

This year is also the first year that we’re hosting conference talks in multiple languages as well. We have an entire Spanish language track, including workshops, covering a range of topics, all presented in Spanish. We’re excited to be able to showcase the amazing talent and accomplishments of the Latin American Joomla community.

What is the venue like? What does “all-inclusive” include?

This year’s event is being held at the all-inclusive Grand Oasis resort in Cancun, Mexico. It’s a beautiful hotel and resort, with a great conference space that I think attendees will really enjoy for their stay and for the conference. “All-inclusive” is one of the nice perks of being able to host the event at the Grand Oasis. Anyone staying at the Grand Oasis for the conference will be able to get really great discounts that we’ve negotiated with the hotel, and this includes everything from the room you’re staying in, as well as access to over a dozen amazing restaurants and bars right in the resort. So with the great rates, that actually include the cost of all your meals while you stay at the resort, I think attendees are going to really enjoy the Grand Oasis.

Our discounted rates extend a full week before and a full week after the conference, so anyone wanting the opportunity to take a break and relax can take advantage of these.

The program looks great! What are some of the highlights for this event?

We’re trying some new things this year, things that I think will make Joomla conferences even better learning and collaborating experiences than we’ve ever had. We started with an amazing lineup of keynotes. We’re really looking forward to having people like Holly Habstritt Gaal, the UX Lead for Mozilla with a talk on Design Processes in Open Source communities. We’ve lined up some other interesting keynotes like Karen Sandler from the Software Freedom Conservancy, Dave Stokes from Oracle (Community Manager at MySQL), and we’re glad to have the amazing and fun Joomla!Ignite session that debuted last year and is returning again this year.

We’ve also got some amazing workshop sessions happening this year, which we haven’t done before. These will be longer, more hands-on sessions on business, development, and design where attendees will be able to go in-depth on some of the popular topics that Joomla users have to deal with every day.

What sort of “social” events do you have planned?

Friday evening we have a Bug Squashing & Beer evening planned, which is always a fun time for people to contribute directly to Joomla with fixing and testing bugs, along with an open bar.

Saturday is our working day, with workshops in the morning, and a chance for the Joomla community to collaborate and give back to the Joomla project with the Joomla! In Action sessions in the afternoon, so we’re throwing a Mayan BBQ on the Beach that evening, with some great food, a relaxing time to kick back and enjoy the local flavor.

We’ve also got Yoga on the Beach planned in the mornings with our Joomla guru, Pete Bui, and if anyone is interested in organizing a morning beach run, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

This BBQ on the Beach, can people bring acoustic instruments?

Yes! We have a fun evening planned on Saturday for attendees, with a BBQ right on the amazing beach at the venue. I’ve heard rumors that people are bringing guitars, and ukuleles - we did this at the first Joomla World Conference in 2012, and it’s time for a repeat Joomla Jam!

Bienvenidos!

This year’s organizing team includes Tito Alvarez, Martijn Boomsma, Mike Carson, Jerri Christiansen, Ronni Christiansen, Vic Drover, Dianne Henning, Jon Neubauer, and Jacques Rentzke. The entire team looks forward to welcoming you to Cancun!
