Written by | Sunday, 01 July 2012 00:00 | Published in 2012 July
Since March 2007, over 30 million copies of the Joomla software have been downloaded according to Joomla.org. Joomla is the world's most popular full-featured Content Management System (CMS) and powers approximately 2.7% of the 1,000,000 largest websites in the world. These websites are in a variety of fields, such as education, arts, media, sports, business, science, technology, health, etc.

It is clear that Joomla is becoming more and more popular and reliable. There are many well-known labels or brands which are using this free CMS to build their own website. I'm sure that you know at least some of Joomla showcases. Thus, in this article, I will introduce you to a mini showcase of 10 of the most popular websites using Joomla.

The website works with K2 to create website content for announcing news, giving information, showing pictures of the school, etc. - to their students as well as visitors.

Ace.nd.edu

The Alliance for Catholic Education, or ACE, responds to the needs of the Church's educational mission through service to children in elementary and secondary schools. ACE is a collaborative effort of twelve different programs all working to strengthen and sustain Catholic schools in the United States.

So far, this is my favorite website not only because it uses Joomla 2.5 to manage the web, but also because of their stunning design and graphics. Furthermore, ACE utilizes many different Joomla extensions in the website such as Rocktabs, RokNavMenu to create tabs and menus, JomSocial for social networking, Core Design Login to display the username and password login form, and many others.

ACE worked closely with Cloudaccess to develop the site

Other extensions running on Linux.com:

Ninjaboard from ninjaforge.com/extensions/ninjaboard
Mosets Tree from www.mosets.com/

Community Answers should not be linked to Jomsocial. It is a product of CoreJoomla www.corejoomla.com/products/community-answers.html

Also, please remove the SEO spam. "Joomla Extensions" should link to extensions.joomla.org, "Joomla 2.5" should link to joomla.org, and "Joomla Blogs" to community.joomla.org/blogs/community.html or joomlareader.com/
Linking these to your employers website is in very poor taste.

Been using joomla since its 1.5 and upgraded to 2.5.9, ang waiting for the 3.5. I think the 3.5 version can handle the migration from 2.5. Overall, Joomla rocks!... my warmest congratulations to the Joomla people and more power!

You should note that TheFashionSpot.com has now moved on to Wordpress. Maybe because many top fashion websites use WP or being that upgrading to J2.5 or 3.0 was too much of a daunting decision (as is the case for many) since the process for such large websites was very costly, and some developer saw it as an opportunity to expound on a Joomla to Wordpress migrator.

The parent site of thefashionspot is Totallyher.com and it still runs on J15 along with some of their other sites but it is quite likely that they will all convert to WP.

The seemingly logical decision would be J3.0.x but then many well used extensions are not compatible with that version yet and websites cannot wait. So then they go to J2.5 and within a year have to incur another transition cost and potential downtime. Quite discouraging.

We primarily setup clients with Joomla but recently 5 clients have switched to WP when we presented them with the options of upgrade.

Joomla is still our preference but this fork that exists is causing an uproar among our team.

I used to run Joomla 1.5 on my previous website. After I sold the domain, I started up a new website using Wordpress and I've stuck with it ever since. It's so much easier to use in my opinion and plugins integrate much better. I always ran into problems with Joomla plugins. About eighty percent of the ones I installed didn't function properly on my site or they didn't play well with each other. Since switching to Wordpress, I haven't encountered that issue. Not to mention, upgrading between versions of Joomla was a huge hassle. Upgrading between versions of Wordpress is a breeze. I guess what platform you use all comes down to what you need it for. And maybe I'll give Joomla another chance in the future since everyone is raving so much about the new updates.

Are you sure all the sites mentioned here are developed with Joomla? I checked them all, didn't see the typical url format generated by Joomla for any links, unless I don't know everything, that means those sites are not done with Joomla. If they are using Joomla, then all the links should have a format such as: www.sample.com/index.php?option=com_cont...le&id=216&Itemid=837. So I'm confused

The Hill is not using Joomla. Looking at the source code, you can see the following tag in the head section:
<meta name="generator" content="Drupal 7 (drupal.org)" />
So its clearly using Drupal. But perhaps previously it might have used Joomla.

Joomla currently powers 3.0% of all the websites. The latest version of Joomla 3.3.6 was released only two days ago. Due to its user-friendly framework and mobile responsiveness, the big players have started showing their trust in Joomla.
The sleek admin area that Joomla offers is simply awesome. It gives you the perfect experience of robust navigation and smooth functionality. With the release of new version, Joomla has made some excellent improvements in security framework, providing the users with page and password hashing, multilingual compatibility, new RSS feed application and documentation of microdata with MediaWiki working efficiently at the backend.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one such area, where Joomla tends to perform rather poorly as compared to other CMS. One common perception amongst the common users is that Joomla’s installation is a cumbersome process and working on it is even harder. The most disturbing part is that Joomla’s decline is real. Over past one year, it has seen its market share shrinking from 3.25% to almost 3%.
I have written a detailed blog post here: www.cloudways.com/blog/is-joomla-still-good/
