Written by Sarah Watz | Saturday, 01 December 2012 00:00 | Published in 2012 December
We are really excited that the Joomla community chose certification as one of the major areas to focus on in the recent survey. The Joomla certification program will be a key factor in furthering the growth, development and success of Joomla.

Why is the Joomla certification program important?

The Joomla certification program will ensure the competence of Joomla professionals. Joomla certification exams will go beyond training by providing a documented measurement of knowledge. The Joomla certification program will establish a standard and play an important role in choosing a Joomla service provider or developing a qualified workforce. Joomla professionals, Joomla service users and employers will all benefit from the certification.

Step 1: A discovery phase

How can you help?

We are looking for volunteers to join the discovery phase. At the JWC, we have asked interested individuals to come forward and get involved in the work of creating this program. We now would also like to ask the wider community to get involved with this very exciting program. During the discovery phase we need a large variation of volunteers with different backgrounds and experience in areas like training, support, development, hiring, management etc.

  • why you think you would be a good member to have on the team for the discovery phase.

Your application will be reviewed and if it is determined that your profile matches the need of the discovery phase we will contact you to discuss your possible involvement.

Description

To start the project "The Joomla Certification Program" we will define the areas to certify along with defining the skillsets required to get certified in the different areas during the discovery phase. The discovery phase is planned to start January 2nd and end February 15th, 2013.

Outcome

A document defining the areas to certify as well as the skill sets required for each area. When the discovery phase is over we will pass this document to the working groups. Then we have the same mindset to work towards for all working groups.

Step 2: Create working groups

How can you help?

We are looking for volunteers to apply to join the working groups to make the Joomla certification project successful. The community members that help out during the discovery phase are more than welcome apply to also join one of the working groups.

Description

The working groups that are formed will initially start with creating the certification program as well as getting the tools for the prepare for the exams/tests like training and documentation.
When everything is launched the working groups will get feedback, adjust the exams/tests and tools when called for. They will also set up a process for how to adjust the exams/tests and tools for every new version of Joomla. It will be an ongoing process.

Team for Certification Program

  • Design the tests/exams or find a company to partner up with.
  • Set a plan on how the certification program should be marketed and communicated.
  • How to plan for internationalization of the program.

If you have a background in working with certification programs before, if worked with communications etc this could be a great working group for you.

Team for Certification Documentation

  • Define if and how the documentation should be adjusted to be a great asset for those preparing for the certification tests/exams.
  • Working on getting the documentation in place.

If you have a background in working with producing documentations, writing books etc this could be a great working group for you.

Team for Certification Training

  • Identify the companies that conduct training on Joomla.
  • Find out what they need to get started conduct training on Joomla to prepare their participants to take the certification ie training materials and training for trainers.
  • Working on getting the need satisfied.

This has been long awaited. It will take away the difficulty of getting experts for projects.

This is a brilliant idea :). As a web designer / developer it's plain to see our industry is often thought of by the laymen as a 'non job'. This is mostly due to the cowboys posing as professionals, building sites for businesses who are none the wiser - since these is no industry accreditation.

Unlike architecture or medicine for example, people won't die if a website is designed and built badly - but the business that owns it will most likely suffer.

At least with a Joomla certification program in place we'll be on a better playing field.

I often get handed Joomla sites by businesses who say the developer has given up and gone awol or they can't get done what needs to get done.

They are often such a mess I have to start again from scratch.

Anyway well done people, I'll try to help in anyway I can :)

I spoke with Paul Orwig recently at the JWC12 about a certification program for extension developers. Too often developers stop developing or do not offer adequate support for the end user. I for one would much rather pay for an extension if I feel that the developer is trustworthy. Can this program also cover a certification program for, at the very least, commercial extensions. Future possibility?

Yes I heard glimpses of this 2 years back when a few Aussies tried to get it going here. Would love to see the idea revived and going again and I'll put me name down to help out with that!

I'm so pleased to see this finally happening. Hopefully this will help clients to separate the experts from the cowboys, and should also tidy up the Joomla development industry in a way that hasn't been done before.

Fingers crossed that this certification will address all aspects of Joomla, from hosting and the selection of secure and robust extensions/templates, to security, SEO and adequate training and handover to the client.

Also, it will be a great benchmarking tool for new aspiring developers who don't currently have a scale on which to grade how good they are.

A wonderful bound forward in the customer quest for good quality developers. I'll be more than happy to help where ever possible.

    Best of luck team.

I'm excited to be a certified. Beside this I'm also working on multiple platforms for learning more, reading Joomla Explained (A Step by Step Guide Book) and exercise. In this season, I try my best to achieve my target and get certification. I always welcome seniors and moderator who guide me and help me.

"The Joomla certification program will establish a standard..."
A standard that is purely artificial. Most likely, applicants already know what they are doing. So it adds zero value.

"...and play an important role in choosing a Joomla service provider or developing a qualified workforce."
How do you measure creativity, flexibility and reliability? I think there's a serious risk of abuse and misconception about what a certificate truly indicates. It wont solve the problem of devs abandoning projects, taking on projects they can't provide an adequate solution for or stop giving support once the project is completed. Not to mention the black sheeps who are looking to rip-off others (you're in fact, running the risk of indirectly supporting them).

"Joomla professionals, Joomla service users and employers will all benefit from the certification"
What are the exact benefits? Knowing that the other person knows, or knowing that you know by handing out a certificate? Because in turn it implies, that the person without certificate is not knowledgable. You're not making anything more transparent. In fact you're putting those without a certificate at a major disadvantage - and not everyone will be able to get one: "internationalization of the program"

I think it would be a lot better and more effective to spend all this time and resources on improving documentation and providing comprehensible tutorials to developers, and in the same turn, educate employers and anyone interested in hiring a dev about minimizing the risks of ending up with a dud. Like, asking for a resume, portfolio, etc.

I strongly believe that everyone interested in working or doing business with joomla (and in general), is also willing to learn and improve naturally. Providing accessible and comprehensible documentation and tutorials goes a damn long way in raising quality of...everything. Doing this through certification only leads to elitism and possibly other social side-effects. And I dont think this is in line with the Joomla spirit.

To give you a good example: How can you talk about "raising competence" and at the same publish an interview titled "Bright Future" with a 15yrs old who talks about "business opportunities"?

I personally don't think that this makes any difference, similar to SEO certificates, AdWords and Analytics Certified professionals. I personally would never hire a company looking at any kind of certificate, but because of previous projects done. Certainly it is not a brilliant idea and doesn't make any difference.

With the amount of applications I'd be expecting for this they might not be able to get back to all of them. An auto reply would be nice but I'm sure someone will get back to you once all the applications are in.

Thanks for you application to the Discovery Phase! We are excited and a bit overwhelmed at how many qualified applications we have received. The work is now underway to review all applications. In early January, that process will be completed, and all applicants will be notified about the result.

This certification will finally give joomla developers and users the respect that they deserve just like accounts and lawyers.
Can't wait to hang this on my wall.

I have participated in 2 major certification processes: MSCE and PMP. One of the MAJOR differences between the 2, and why the PMP is such an honored certification, is that the candidates must show proof not only of expertise, but of experience, too. I hope this will be something that will be considered for Joomla! certification, so it's not simply a matter of taking the training that teaches you how to pass the test, as the MCSE became. When "just anyone" can take a test because they've learned how to memorize answers for that test, the certification becomes worthless.

    Thanks,
    Beth

I have some ideas near about this program.
May be should create special certification for 3rd party extensions.

To check langauage files, correct MVC and ability to easy upgrade.
And assign special sign for this extensions in JED

The problem with certifications, is that it won't be long before a website appears 'How to Pass the Joomla Certification Exam', let alone the cost to certify and re-certify (unless it's going to be free?).
So I doubt it's going to offer any real value in the long-term.

certification should not be about passing an exam - that's rubbish.
Personally, I believe certification should be about competency with joomla and involvement in the community, as well as feedback from the community/leaders/contacts (like dribbble, linkedin, etc) ... see and get involved in the discussion (almost 100 comments)here:
