The Joomla! 1.6 Beginner's Guide is available and it's FREE!

Written by Hagen Graf | Tuesday, 01 March 2011 00:00 | Published in 2011 March
Level of Difficulty:Beginner At the end of last year I was thinking what I could do to spread the word about the new Joomla! 1.6 and the result is the free Joomla! 1.6 - Beginner's Guide, that I have written. It has 174 pages and covers all the things which are important to know and a few others, too.

The whole book is about the core Joomla! 1.6 package.

Even though you might be a beginner with Joomla!, after reading this book you will have the knowledge needed to manage your own Joomla! website effectively. If you are somewhat familar with HTML, CSS and image editing, you will learn how to customize a template for your website. The book is available in both English and German (Joomla! 1.6 - Das Einsteigerbuch). The books are readable for FREE without registration at our website, and the English edition is downloadable for FREE as PDF.

In order to allow comfortable access, the book is structured as follows:

  1. hagenIntroduction
  2. Showcase
  3. Installation
  4. Structures and Terms
  5. What's New in Joomla! 1.6
  6. Managing Content
  7. Website and Content Configuration
  8. Templates
  9. Navigation
  10. Users and Permissions
  11. Extension Management
  12. Core Extensions
  13. Modules
  14. Plug-ins
  15. Multi-Language website
  16. Working with Templates
  17. Search Engine Optimization
  18. Upgrade from Joomla! 1.5 to Joomla! 1.6
  19. Resources

This book is part of my contribution to the worldwide Joomla! community. Please refer to the links below to get this book and learn how to take advantage of all of the power that Joomla! 1.6 offers!

Hi John, it was one of my ideas with this book to have something freely available for beginner's in user groups. Please tell them to comment in the HTML version on the chapters if they find errors or things I forgot and whether it was useful.

I learned Joomla! many years ago reading a Mambo book written by Hagen. I also had the opportunity to meet him a few years ago in San Francisco where we both presented at an OSCMS conference.

Given his knowledge and depth of experience with Joomla!, you can be confident this book will help you learn Joomla!, too. The fact that he is sharing electronic copies at no charge to the Joomla! community speaks to his love of community.

Hagen - I really appreciate your generosity, kindness, support, and involvement with Joomla! and free software over the years. You da man.

Hi Leo, it is for sure no masterpiece :-) but you're right. It was the time to do something and I am very curious about the future of Joomla!. About the 1.7 release in July 2011, the Molajo distrubution and the Nooku thingie. This project has so much potential!

    Hi Hagen,

Thanks for your generosity. I know how much work goes into something like this. To offer it for free is amazing.

It's people like you that really spoil the Joomla! community. I hope everyone appreciates what you are doing for them.

    Best regards,

    Joe

Hi Joe Joomla! (I'm blown away from all the positive comments. It's a good motivation for me, even when you just mentioned in your article 'Joomla! is not all about being free. The only thing that is free is your freedom to use Joomla! without expensive licensing fees.'
    http://magazine.joomla.org/issues/Issue-Mar-2011/item/405-Friendly-Advice-For- Your-Joomla-Adventure
and you are right. I cannot feed my family only with positive comments. People downloaded the book since March 1 1,300 times for free and bought 2! books at Lulu (One of the two was Amy Stephen :-) ).
We have to think very seriously about this. It's the same situation for all contributors of extensions, templates, plugins, documentation, marketing, this magazine here and all the other stuff.

But for now I am very, very happy with the positive comments :-)

    Hi Pieter,
I am thinking the same. I don't like cutting trees for computer manuals. For people who want to do me a favour there are at the moment two other possibilities:
    - it is possible to 'flattr' the english book
    https://flattr.com/thing/141448/Joomla-1-6-Beginners-Guide
    flattr is an interesting approach
    - you can download the pdf and pay a small amount of money for it :-)
    http://www.lulu.com/product/file-download/joomla-16-beginners-guide/15056652
    - tweet about the free book, so more people will get curious about Joomla! 1.6 :-)

    Hagen Graf-san,

I am from Yokohama, Japan. My first encounter on Joomla was 2005 and I bought your Joomla Book written in English. It was so helpful. Thanks.

Since then your name is always somewhere in my brain.

I am working on Joomla1.6 and finding some difficulty on ACL feature, because there are not enough reference information at this moment.

ACL feature provides us with business chances to build enterprise corporate sites.

Your contributions on this would be deeply appreciated down the road.

Thank again for your contributions on Joomla.

Doesn't include information on how to link from one article to another. I have used the code index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=XX(ID of article) that worked in version 1.5 but this only gives a 404 error.
