The Method to our Marketing Madness

The Method to our Marketing Madness

What takes place when the marketers meet the developers? In 2014 I've watched the most incredible community come together, and we are inspired every moment along the way. Each year, we reflect, we remember challenges and we celebrate success. We celebrate the moments that connect us. Here is a glimpse of the marketing successes of 2014.

Slightly more than a year ago, Michael Babker launched the 3.2 release. The moment we launched, both the marketing team and PLT knew we had stumbled across something special. But what followed surprised us as much as anyone else, and the impact it’s had on both the community and the project is truly profound.

Shortly after JWC13, David Hurley took the marketing team and PLT to the next level. We launched the Framework website Framework website. Together with you, we’ve found new ways of connecting developers and marketing. We’ve created a whole new kind of cultural that lets developers and marketers share their love for Joomla.

Women in IT is a controversial subject, but it's a subject that is close to Shirat Goldstein’s heart. She managed our “Women in Open Source Week” featuring Joomla's women leaders. Great news! The article that Shirat wrote for Opensource.com was included in a new eBook: "How Women are Shaping the Open Source Landscape." This eBook is part of RedHat’s Open Voices eBook series.

In March we watched our brand manager — Chiara Aliotta step out of her comfort zone and learn to bug squash. We are still worried Chiara leave our team and join the bug squad.

Max Lynham led the 3.3 release campaign. This included highlighting the new features, preparing marketing material and helping to communicate important information.

This summer our CLT liaison Ruth Cheesley represented Joomla at The Grace Hopper Celebration, the world's largest gathering of women technologists. Led by Mike Veekmans, the marketing team created brand new Joomla booth for the event. We asked our big marketing group to help us find a great slogan, something that would not only say who we are, but inspire and grab the audience’s attention and curiosity. The result:

Everyone finds a hidden talent at least once in their life. George Wilson's new design talent emerged while brainstorming with the update working group this last month.

One of the initiatives launched under the leadership of Chris Nielsen was to undertake a SWOT analysis of The Joomla! Project. Joe Sonne made sure this project found its way in front of OSM. John Coonan presented and recorded the results of the SWOT analysis so the rest of the leadership teams could listen to it. Many of the findings have resulted in initiatives that are already underway by our leadership.

The Joomla Marketing Team Culture Code is the most important project the marketing team has accomplished in 2014. This is the foundation of our team. It reflects what is important to the members about how the marketing team works together. A great culture helps to inspire and attract the best people. Together we can do great things.

Together Marketing and Developers brought billions of hours of work, laughter. I think we can call that a pretty good year.

What’s in store for 2015?

2015 will be a year of celebration for the Joomla! Project and an important year for all Joomlers. We will keep working closely with the leadership teams, improving communication inside and outside our community. Great initiatives are already in our minds in order to promote the Joomla! Project and be able to embrace innovation.

Our New Year’s resolutions?

  • Conquer the CMS world!
  • Pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
  • Nurturing Joomlers and our customers so that they can achieve their goals and dreams!
