JoomlaCamp New York City 2018: what and why

JoomlaCamp New York City 2018: what and why

Our first real official Joomla Day NYC was in 2008 in Google. In 2009, I coordinated the first JoomlaDayNYC in a 'paid space'. This event was in a small space that most of us called the 'chachkie' space. If you were there you will know what I mean! In the front entrance, you saw little trinkets, etc. At the same time, almost 200 people met and worked on Joomla. It was an exciting weekend for all involved. We met people from other countries, focused on Joomla, and had a ton of fun!

After the event was complete, everyone wanted more. Our user group discussed, and discussed, one member, suggested, let's have a camp! But the 'camp' would not be like a conference where workshops are scheduled. Let's do it as an 'unconference'. Let's have 'workshops', where it is about 'doing' and not 'lectures'. So in the winter of 2010, we tried it, and it worked.

We have run this event every year since then, each one completely different from the last. Our focus has been not to have 'speakers' but to have 'mentors'. We would ask all participants at the beginning of the day, "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN?". Put the topics on a whiteboard, the break up into groups. Sometimes someone who wasn't originally a 'mentor' became one because they were an expert on the topic suggested. The topics ranged from galleries, forms, to social media in Joomla. Each group would gather around a computer and 'play'. Nothing scripted, nothing planned ahead.

Another aspect of this event is the networking. The purpose is to get to know other Joomlers through 'work'. We always distributed a networking program with a list of all participants, their websites, names and contact information with their permission first!

During the event, we will have the Joomla! Administrator Exam, the first available Joomla! certification exam. Its goals are to establish a certain standard and provide a documented measurement of knowledge. This ensures the competence of Joomla! professionals and contributes to the development of a qualified workforce. It will also provide clients with an easier way to find a Joomla! Professional.

By the end of the event, the participants are always asking when will the next Joomla Camp be??? I highly encourage any Joomla User Group, to consider having a Joomla camp in your area. It is easy to setup, you need space, a few 'mentors', and a form for people to register, and that's it! You can choose to provide food or not, it is up to you. Keep it simple, and the day will just 'work'!
