The Joomla User Group session met in the North Lobby of the hotel and ultimately we had to take chairs from all over the lobby as we had a nice little group; about 10 of us. There were around four from British Columbia, one from South Africa and the rest from the United States – someone correct me if I’m wrong in the comments.
The JUG Vancouver had been unpublished probably due to inactivity or TM violation but had been removed from the directory through the migration from 1.5 to 3.x recently (thank you for migrating CJO, Rowan!!) so I had no way of knowing the real reason. We started from scratch.
It was a great opportunity to take the Organiser for the Vancouver group through the Trademark rules and how to get his listing published, thus also instructing the other users to the process as well. He was running the group mainly by himself prior and during the event two other people stepped up to help him with organising the JUG. It’s hard to run a Joomla! User Group alone so this is really good. The rest of the people in the session benefited from all his questions and the critique of his meetup site and all that needed to be done.
By the end of the conference, the Joomla! User Group Vancouver was reestablished and listed in the Joomla! User Group Directory. Yay!
Two other groups from the US were interested in forming as well. One in Lansing, MI and the other in Greenville, SC (Asheville, NC is close by if those in NC are interested). Greenville has already submitted and will probably be listed on the JUG Directory by the time you read this. Lansing wasn't quite ready to submit the listing but has all the information on how to do so when they are ready. One thing Lansing may need is a second organiser/contact.
The gentleman from South Africa was connected with the organizer from an existing group there which hasn’t been particularly active. We all hope that a new member might bring things back to life in South Africa.
All in all I’m quite pleased to potentially add three new Joomla! User Groups to the family as a result of just a little time.
Joomla in Action indeed.
