Taking over the Joomla! Bug Squad Lead

Taking over the Joomla! Bug Squad Lead

A few weeks ago I took over as team lead for the Joomla! Bug Squad (JBS). There hasn’t been much news about this change until now. First and foremost I want to thank Nick Savov for leading the JBS the last couple of years. A big round of applause please. The last couple of weeks I needed to gather my thoughts and draw up some rough guidelines as to what I see in the future of the JBS. These guidelines have now been written down in what I have dubbed the JBS manifesto. The goal is to help me stay focused on guiding the JBS.

Pizza, Bugs, and Fun events

Last October we had the International Pizza, Bugs, and Fun and I would like to thank everyone who participated in this event and made it into a huge success.

Despite the success of the International Pizza, Bugs, and Fun, I would like to see the PBF events more spread out over the year. What we see now is that a lot of issues are touched during a PBF event, but then turn into dust collectors as nobody is looking at them until a next PBF. This is the downside of a yearly event.

My plan is to work on organizing more PBF events over the course of the next year to keep the flow moving. The JBS should become a place where PBF organizers can go for assistance, documentation, know-how, best practices, and point-of-contact.

Documentation

The state of the documentation on JBS related topics is outdated and needs to be refreshed; this is something I would like to achieve in the next year.

There is a JBS portal and this should become the one-stop shop we can send our volunteers if they are looking for information on how to join and contribute to Joomla.

Testing

Over the past year we have had a number of back-to-back releases causing more headaches than we want. For future releases it would be good to get more testing done on alpha and beta releases through the JBS channels rather than hoping that someone else has tested the upcoming release. The idea behind this is to develop a plan in coordination with the release manager to get more test coverage.

In addition to this we also have the unit testing and system testing work groups to ensure Joomla gets well tested before any release. The working groups have done a lot already but a lot more ground needs to be covered.

Let’s get started

I hope this has given you some insight into what I have in mind for the JBS. If you are interested in joining the JBS, want to talk about my vision, or just want to chat feel free to contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I hope to see you around at one of our events.
