Joomla! to attend Merge / CMS Summit 2017

CMS Summit will bring together developers, integrators, designers, experts, and users with other Merge attendees ranging from start-ups, hosting companies, funding, digital media and legal experts to domain owners looking for advice and help with launching their site.  The conference will offer much more than sessions and training by creating a unique networking situation to drive business and commerce.

THE MERGE SHOW is a group of conferences – like a ‘worlds fair’ event – hosting different events within MERGE! (new and old) with technology and domain names at the core. One of these is the well attended THEDomain Conference, in its third year. A continuation of a long-standing gathering of a who's who in the domain space. This event draws people to sunny Florida every fall, for its wealth of good networking, content, and opportunities, as well as being a who’s who of experts on appraisal, brokering, registries, registrars, domain advertising, registration, TLD Applications, email services and other investment opportunities.

THEDomainConference is just one of many other sub events, activities and open meetings, which also will include: Allegravita's China Bootcamp, Blockchain Road Show,  CMS Summit, Confluir, McGrady Domain Academy, TheWHIR Networking Event and more.

MERGE is a brain child of Jothan Frakes is a domain industry guy, kind of a techie, and he knew almost everyone at Hostingcon from 20+ years in domains and hosting.  He is the Co-Founder of a series of conferences in the domain name space - NamesCon, DOMAINfest, Domain Roundtable, and MMX, and Ray Neu - The operator of THE Domain Conference, and formerly T.R.A.F.F.I.C. international events in Milan, Dublin, and Vancouver over the past decade.

Jothan Frakes and I met at HostingCon 2017 while I worked at the Joomla booth at the expo.  Jothan got it and was very excited to meet us, and he started telling me about the MERGE multi-show conference concept.

As the discussion evolved, it became more clear he knew what he was talking about with Domain Names - and that they are at the heart of most everything, but are quietly expected to just work, and really are just part of the story.  Just like a CMS, really.  As we spoke more, the discussion started to recognize the brilliance of the pairing of platforms and domains - beyond just hosting/cloud - and about how he could get Joomla involved in MERGE.

After HostingCon, Jothan and I started bringing our event backgrounds together, creating a whole series of content and working out how to incorporate Joomla training and sessions.  It became rapidly evident with both of us that this would be a lot bigger than we anticipated, which was OK. And CMS Summit was born.

The concept of bringing together the top CMSes and their respective communities together at one show is something I have been thinking about for some years.  Joomla Days and WordCamps and other CMS-specific meetups, user groups, and meetings happen every month around the world and bring together the best and brightest of the Open Source community, but these two communities (domains and CMS) rarely cross paths, except for sporadic sponsorship from domain registries or registrars of meetups or events.

MERGE brings a number of different disciplines, people with amazing single word .com domains worth bazillions of dollars, and the many registries with the new dots that have joined .com, like .blog, .beer, .wiki, .host, and .bar - literally hundreds of them.  There are TLDs like .cool, .club or .wedding - and they want to reach the people who will use the domains.  We’re the people, as integrators, developers, and designers that have those direct connections with the customers and clients who might want a killer domain name for their new or redesigned site.

Imagine you are working on a website for a client’s wedding, which will be in Las Vegas.  How amazing would Vegas.Wedding be for that as a domain name?  And Wedding.Vegas is an option too.

With all the changes in the domain space, all the amazing things that can be accomplished with CMS to manifest new ideas, it was time to take the evolutionary step forward and MERGE the domain and CMS crowds.  CMS Summit is here to change that.
