What will Joomla 4.2 bring in August 2022?

1609780977674

As we celebrate the launch of Joomla 4.1.0 and enjoy the new features and functionality that it has brought to Joomla there are a few who have been working away on the next iteration of this rejuvenated CMS.

Franciska Perisa and Roland Dalmulder are the release leads for the Joomla 4.2 series.

They have been working hard to get up to speed with how to do a Joomla release. Over the last few months, they have shadowed Benjamin and Tobias through the process and joined on release days at the moment the big red launch button is pushed.

Now that Joomla 4.1.0, with all its great new features, has made its way into the world, it is time to start looking at Joomla 4.2.0 and what that could bring us.

The first list of potential features

In the past few months, Franciska and Roland have been going through the issue tracker, discussion list and GSoC projects to see what looks interesting and could be ready to include in Joomla 4.2.0.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of features that they are looking at including:

Add custom fields to the Category List menu item (or tagged item list)
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/discussions/18457

Redesign mail templates
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/issues/33657

Make mail templates cross extension
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/discussions/36646

Redesign the global configuration options
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/issues/31495

Cookie manager
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/35278

Roland and Franciska are looking for other features that would help the Joomla project. Features that will be ready on time and will add worth to the whole of the CMS.

So are you working on a potential feature you’d like to see included in Joomla, this is your chance: add to the comments below, with details of your feature or contact Roland or Franciska directly. You can find them in the Volunteers portal or on Glip.

Timeline for the release of Joomla 4.2

The timeline as it stands now looks as follows:

Alpha releases

Where new features are added and many changes are made.

  • Alpha 1: March 29th, 2022
  • Alpha 2: April 26th, 2022
  • Alpha 3: May 24th, 2022

Beta releases

In the Beta stage, we are making a freeze on what features can be added, but minor changes to what is already in can be made.

  • Beta 1: June 7th 2022
  • Beta 2: June 21st 2022
  • Beta 3: July 5th 2022

Release candidates

When in the release candidate phase no more can be added or changed, we are testing and bug fixing making the product stable for launch day.

  • Release candidate: July 19th 2022
  • Final release: August 16th 2022

This whole process relies on people coming forward to help make it happen.

Can you help?

If you have features to add then we need you to get in touch.

We also need:

  • People to organise Pizza Bugs and Fun sessions.
  • People to test the code.
  • People to write the code.
  • Documents written to explain the features.
  • Graphics made to illustrate the features.

If this is something you could help with, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. > Patrick Jackson, our Volunteer Engagement Team Leader who will help you find the right person.

This is a community project and we need the community to get behind Franciska and Roland to make this another great release, so please do come forward if you have any time to help make Joomla even better.

Help Joomla

Hello Herve,

As for what will be included in 4.2 completely depends on our volunteers. If a feature is found usable and ready to be included, I do not see any reason not to include it. First people will have to develop such features, there are great ideas out there but if they just remain ideas then it cannot go into 4.2. We need actual code As for the status of these features, some have seen some development, others have seen no development. We can use all the help so feel free to help out on our issue tracker at https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pulls
