Joomla's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is Proud to Announce Team Lead: Puneet Kala

The Joomla! Project is proud to announce that we are kicking off this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) bid! Google Summer of Code is a global program that connects students and open source projects to work on exciting projects during summer break.

We had a very successful program back in 2014 and previous years with a great success rate of projects that have become major Joomla features or essential developer tools in libraries.

The Production Leadership Team (PLT) would like to welcome Puneet Kala, who has stepped up to be team lead of the Joomla GSoC project and has been planning the launch of the 2016 program. Ana Barcellos will be working aside of Puneet as an assistant team lead and Ashan Fernando will be working as a mentor, in which Ashan was a past GSoC student.

Help Wanted

If you’re interested in helping with GSoC, mentoring a student, or you are a student, we’d love to hear from you. There are several ways you could help this year! If you’re a programmer who just doesn’t have the time to take on mentoring a student and project (we’re all busy!) maybe you could just offer some assistance when a student has the need for some code to be tested by several different testers who can provide useful feedback.

If you are a programmer and you do have a bit of available time over the summer, we can always use more mentors. Even if you can’t commit to a full time mentoring position, just having someone available at the right time can make a difference. Just talk to us, we’ll find a way to work with your schedule and the time you have available. Of course, if you can commit to mentoring a project, we would love to hear from you too - don’t be shy!

If you are interested in applying to volunteer with the program, please fill out our application form here.

Application Deadline: 21st February, 2016

There’s a lot of information about GSoC out there, specific to Joomla and more general just for GSoC. Here’s a few links to help you out:

Puneet Kala is a Joomla Volunteer from Bangalore, India and has been involved in the Joomla Project since 2012. He started as a GSoC student in 2013 with the Automated Selenium Webdriver Project. He is currently the head of Automated Testing working group in Joomla. In 2014, he also was a mentor for students in the Google Summer of Code project. He also organizes the Joomla! Bangalore meetup group.

We would also greatly appreciate any feedback that you may have for our program as we are always striving to improve and make our projects and processes better. You are welcome to contact Puneet here: GSoC (at) opensourcematters.org
