Joomla 3.0 is due out next month, and if you're thinking "oh no, another migration situation!", don't get your feathers all ruffled yet. If you're on Joomla 2.5 you'll be absolutely fine staying where you are, probably until 2014.
The most active Skype group I follow is the Joomla! 3.0 Marketing chat, managed by Steve Burge. Because of this group I keep Skype sound alerts turned off, otherwise I'd get nothing done, but the ideas and collaboration that scroll by in the marketing chat are really exciting. They are getting ready to tell the world about the next major Joomla release.
With 3.0 due out next month I decided it was high time I migrate my biggest website to 2.5. I had also noticed that some of my favorite extensions were no longer being supported for 1.5, and I couldn't get updates. Because I'm using a variety of extensions with lots of stored data, I waited until now to be sure they were all 2.5 ready. I also knew it would take a little time, and I would need some help. All of those things fell into place in July, and I'm very happy with the results.
My migration story and the reasons for it aren't that different from the joomla.org 2.5 migration that also happened last month. New features in the 2.5 core meant they didn't have to migrate all the extensions because the same functionality comes built-in, one of the many advantages of the new version. You can read about the migration of joomla.org in Sander Potjer's leadership blog.
Further sneak previews from the marketing team indicate that the migration from 2.5 to 3.0 and future versions will be easy. Hurray! And also, 3.0 is all about goin' mobile. We'll have more about 3.0 in our September issue...
If you haven't migrated your 1.5 website yet I recommend that you do. Many extensions are no longer being offered for 1.5, and 1.5's end-of-life is upon us. Version 2.5 is the place to be now, and it's good to know we can stay with this version for months to come, knowing that the next version upgrade will be a breeze.
There's no time like the present for your 2.5 migration to take wing!
