"Joomla! 24-Hour Trainer" - the new A to Z book for novices

A new Joomla! book, Joomla! 24-Hour Trainer, is coming out next month. Its author is Jen Kramer, faculty member and program director of the Master’s of Science in Information Technology program at Vermont’s Marlboro College Graduate School. A long-time instructor, Jen teaches courses in conceptual web design, web applications, and internet marketing, and is also the co-owner of www.4webinc.com, a web development company that specializes in building highly customized Joomla! websites. Joomla! 24-Hour Trainer is Jen’s second book, coming a little more than a year after her first one, Joomla! Start to Finish: How to Plan, Execute, and Maintain Your Web Site.

A book for novices – what to expect

At 408 pages long, the new book is a well-structured and comprehensive A-to-Z training course, particularly well suited for website novices. Easy to follow and built around a project that involves creating a website for a Fictitious Elementary School, Joomla! 24-Hour Trainer will take its beginner level readers really far, providing them with all the knowledge and practical experience they need to be able to plan, build, and maintain on their own a professional looking Joomla! website.

A full-length training course – structure and layout

The book's content is split into 10 sections (the table of contents is available here).

  • The introductory section, featuring 3 chapters or lessons, unveils some basic, but important concepts related to choosing and planning database-driven versus static websites, selecting a relevant domain name and picking a reliable hosting provider. It introduces the reader to Joomla! and serves as a segue into the next eight sections of the book.

“I was OK with covering Joomla! 1.5 for two reasons,” says Jen. “First, it wasn't clear when Joomla! 1.6 was going to be stable enough to start writing about it back in June 2010, when I signed the contract. Second, there are millions of Joomla! 1.5 sites out there, and someone must maintain them. Joomla! 1.5 will be with us for quite a while, probably long past its end of life date of April 2012 – so I think this book has some good life in it.”

  • The next eight sections, spanning 31 chapter lessons will gradually immerse the reader into the inner workings of the Joomla! content management system. The goal behind each lesson is to demystify and remove the perceived complexities associated with all of the processes related to building a Joomla! site, including non-trivial tasks like installing the software, adding extensions, and setting up a reliable backup solution. Each lesson, focused around a specific task, is a step-by-step tutorial that demonstrates how the task gets implemented.

Additional supporting materials in the form of snapshots and videos are also provided and the reader is encouraged to participate actively in the learning process by implementing a special "Try it" assignment, found at the end of each training chapter.

  • The book’s last section offers resources related to the Joomla! project, documentation and community. It also discusses the differences between Joomla! 1.5 and 1.6 and provides an overview of the content management system’s latest features and improvements.

In conclusion

bookcover"Joomla! 24 Hour Trainer is for your clients, and it's for hobbyists who just want to build a site for their scout troop, the bowling league, or whatever organization they love,” says Jen, whose motivation for writing the book is to help novice website builders/designers understand better and embrace Joomla! as the web building tool of their choice. “It assumes the reader has never built a site before, has no idea what HTML/CSS/PHP/MySQL is, no idea what a host is or a domain name, and no idea how to get started."

The book will be available for distribution in May, via Wrox Press, a division of John Wiley & Sons, Inc. For questions about Joomla! 24 Hour Trainer, contact Jen @ http://www.4webinc.com/contact, or visit http://www.joomla24hourtrainer.com.
