Outsider's View of Joomla!

Outsider's View of Joomla!

On June 8th, 2011 I had the opportunity to offer up some Joomla! advice via Twitter to Lexi who had hash-tagged #joomla and was struggling with some functionality of articles (com_content) and Joomla!’s “readmore” function.

Eventually, the issue was sorted, but I had the idea that it might be nice to get a fresh set of eyes and perspective on the code, community, and software that I had fallen in love with. So, with that in mind, I sent a DM to Lexi and asked her if she would be wiling to participate in this blog post. I wanted to know what someone new to the Joomla! platform thought about it. I asked Lexi the following questions; these are her responses.

Questions:

What is your experience with web publishing and content management systems?

I’ve had very little experience, besides the usual blog post here and there. I never actually had the ‘need’ to manage a website until now.

What other content management systems have you used?

Apart from the basic WP [wordpress] and FTP [traditional HTML], none.

What did you like about them?

Besides being free, nothing. They have a lot of limitations if you are a beginner.

What didn’t you like about them?

I didn’t like the fact that they limit me to do certain things.

How did you discover Joomla!?

My brother first suggested it to me, so I figured I would read about it and try it out.

What made you choose Joomla! over another CMS?

I like the interface, the easy management and all the extensions I can add.

How much work have you done in Joomla!?

So far, I have set up three websites using Joomla!, one of them is a medical community which requires more management and the use of more extensions therefore, I use Joomla! on a daily basis.

What type of website do you plan to use Joomla! on?

A personal blog, medical community and a brand new personal project.

Overall, did you have a good or bad experience with Joomla!?

I’ve had some issues with certain things, but overall it’s been a great experience, any problems that I’ve had are easy and fast to resolve.

What did you find easiest to do with Joomla!?

Installing it; I expected it to be more complex, but with a few clicks you are up and running!

What was the hardest thing to figure out to do in Joomla!?

So far the hardest thing is trying to figure out how to use the contacts and add flash galleries [I can’t seem to get them to work].

When you needed help with Joomla!, did you know where to get it?

Yes, I went to the Joomla! Forums [http://forum.joomla.org/] but, I resolved any problems myself, before anyone could answer.

If you could have the opportunity to change something in Joomla!, what would it be?
An easier way to upgrade Joomla!, maybe by adding an upgrade section, to patch it with a few clicks.
Will you be using Joomla! on more websites in the future?

Yes, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
