The Conference Crasher

The Conference Crasher

So, let me start by saying I wasn’t a Joomla Guy. I was a web application guy that was used to using frameworks like Codeigniter and Ruby on Rails. I met the guys at Cont3nt.com who were building a really exciting service for freelance journalists. I asked them what they were writing it in and they said “Joomla.” My first reaction was, “Really?”

I decided to join the team as Senior Developer and was thrown into the mix of maintaining our Joomla Application. My boss mentioned that there was this big world-wide Joomla event happening in San Jose, CA... only problem was registration had already closed.

I walked into the eBay Town Hall nervous, but hopeful. After flying eleven hours from Washington DC to San Jose California, I was clearly exhausted, but running on determination. The only problem was I didn’t have a ticket. After speaking with Ronnie K.G. Christiansen about my dilemma he told me that he would find out what he could do.  I heard the German accent of Robert Deutz from around the corner “No, No, No, Registration is closed.” “This is it,” I thought, “I’m going to be spending the next three days in a Motel 6 in San Jose.” I pleaded my case – “Please, I’ve flown eleven hours in hopes of being able to join in!” A wave of relief came upon me when I heard that I would be allowed entry. At that point in time there were no sweeter words.

I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly and welcoming the Joomla community was. They took me in and treated me as one of their own. It’s a community that encourages and motivates you to become more involved, so I signed up to help with System Tests and the Bug Squad.

After three days of great sessions and making new friends, it was time to go home to DC equipped with new knowledge and connections. It was then that I realized that I had gone from outlaw to part of the Joomla family. I couldn’t be more excited about being able to use Joomla on our projects at Cont3nt.com. I am a proud Joomla convert thanks to the Joomla World Conference, and I promise that next time I will be one of the first book my ticket.
