Written by | Sunday, 01 January 2012 00:00 | Published in 2012 January
"A picture is worth a thousand words". In the online world, this adage is still correct. Your website will look more lively and stunning if there is a photo gallery. Yes, photos not only help you share your world with website visitors but they also help you convey your ideas.

If you use Joomla, the Joomla Directory Extensions (JED) must be one of the first resources you visit to choose your photo gallery. But with 50+ photo flash galleries and 80+ photo galleries, you cannot pick the most suitable image gallery quickly, right? That's why I am so happy to announce that I've chosen and made a review of five stunning Joomla photos galleries. I hope that it will save you time in your website building process.

Please note that all the free image galleries below are under GPL license.

  • Simple usage: I can upload multiple images at one time; create photo galleries in just a few steps and so on.
  • Extensible ability: It allows me to connect with other photo resources such as Picasa, Flickr, etc.
  • Some third-party extensions supported such as VirtueMart, JoomFish, sh404SEF and so on.
  • Some stunning image presentation effects and essential photo customization such as rotation, cropping, etc.
  • Multiple presentations: Photos can be presented in menus, modules and inside articles.
  • Unlimited image upload: I can upload and present as many images as I want.
  • Some other useful features such as allowing visitors to leave comments, create user-generated galleries or add Geotagging support so that I can display Google Map with images and so on.

Thank you for this article. I do think the combination of extensions is not ideal though

    1) It's quite strange mixing components with plugins and comparing the two...they just apply to different uses really:

    - If you want to have an organized set of photo galleries, you'll need a component, like Phoca Gallery
    - If you want a versatile image presentation implementation for your articles, then you'll need a plugin, like SIG...

Moreover, I don't think the description of the mentioned extensions is a good one. You did not mention that Phoca can load Picasa Albums or even Youtube videos...

    2) Also you certainly missed the more versatile, feature packed and well written and documented gallery plugin (free or commercial), which is sigplus

    Thanks for your input!

This article definitely won't cover all popular Joomla galleries on JED. Narrowing the focus of article I focus on the concrete purpose of each gallery.

    >>> You did not mention that Phoca can load Picasa Albums or even Youtube videos..
The article covers the basic review of mentioned Joomla galleries. For further details about other features you can find on developer's website.

Anh Tuan Bui's employer will be very satisfied about the fact, that his "head of Marketing & Sales Team" managed to place a review of their Joomla! extension "JSN ImageShow Free" (the reduced, free version of a commercial product) in the Community Magacine! This is a marketing - stroke of genius. :)

Hi Andreas, thanks for your comment. The JCM regularly publishes contributions such as this. Our standards in cases such as this are that the article must provide useful, factual information, that the article must not be exceedingly self-promotional, and that the author must disclose any compensated relationship.

As long as all those standards are met, then the JCM is happy to provide a place where all members of the community can share their knowledge about the aspects of Joomla that they are among the world's leading experts on!

    Thanks for your comment, Andreas!

I chose the gallery extensions based on the community opinion combined in the votes and helpful review. As you could see, the mentioned extensions in the article are in the Top List of sections "Photo Flash Gallery" and "Photo Gallery".

Here, under the "Free" we understand the GNU/GPL license and the fact that any users can go to the website and download without registration. It doesn't require you or anyone to be a "member".

    Hi Paul!

Thanks for your comment on my comment. So, the fact that the commercial of Anh Tuan Bui pretends to review "JSN ImageShow Free", but the link just below the main image of "JSN ImageShow Free", labelled with "JSN ImageShow Free", links to the commercial version "JSN ImageShow Pro" (the free version isn't listed in the JED at all) .... really meets your standards of an "editorial article"?

    Andreas,

The link has been removed and I initially didn't intend to confuse you or anyone here with free and pro editions. So my bad.

You have a keen eyes, so you could be an author contributor or reviewer of coming JCM articles? JCM Needs help of anyone who have the time to contribute the helpful articles.

    Hi Anh Tuan Bui!

    First, thanks for your responses.
About your selection, the top extensions in "Photo Gallery" (3) and "Photo Flash Gallery" (3) in terms of user rating are: Art Gallery, sigplus, SIGE and JSN Image Show PRO, Dolby Gallery and Ozio Gallery. Not a single one of those has been selected for your review - even not "JSN Image Show PRO" because your review is about "JSN Image Show FREE" (FREE in terms of "nothing to pay for", as used by your company), which is not listed in the JED.
For your selection, you used the top extensions in terms of popularity, but forgot to mention the by far most popular Photo Flash Gallery the Ozio Gallery (a direct competitor to your commercial product JSN Image Show PRO). Once again, the extension "JSN Image Show FREE" you reviewed here is not listed in the JED.

See, I respect what you did as what it is. A commercial for your product. And you have my deepest respect for getting the JCM-team to publish it. It is their failure I denounce, not yours.
In addition, let me make clear that I am absolutely NOT against commercial extensions in the JED, I am just against commercials camouflaged as editorial content, and this is what we have here. You review a free extension not available in the JED (JSN Image Show FREE) to advertise your commercial extension (JSN Image Show PRO).

    Best regards
    Andreas

    Hi again Andreas!

I don't agree that there was a failure by the JCM regarding this article. This article meets the JCM's publishing standards as explained in our Article Submission Guide.

So I think this is simply a case where you don't agree with the JCM's publishing standards. But that's okay, your objection is noted, and thank you for contributing your comments!

Hello and thank you for this review.
What about the accessibility (WCAG and so on)? Is it possible to fill the alt image tag for each image?
What is their rendering without Javascript and CSS (are the information still structured) ?

    Regards
    Fred

Hi, I don't understand the CONs of Phoca Gallery:

"- No extensible ability to connect with other photo resources."

Phoca Gallery supports importing images from:
    - Google Picasa
    - Facebook user account
    - Facebook fan page

and supports exporting images to Facebook:
    - to user albums
    - to fan page albums
    - or to wall per RSS

    ( http://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-gallery-component/321-displaying-google- picasa-web-albums , http://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-gallery-component/443-displaying-facebook- albums )

"- Complicated usage with some components installation if you want to use more features."

Will be great to get more info about this, to know what all needs to be improved (I cannot image what this exactly means :-( ).

Anyway thank you for reviewing Phoca Gallery.
